4 reasons why Texas football will pull off a massive upset vs. OK State
2) Why Texas football can upset Oklahoma State: Taking care of the football
While senior star Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger hasn’t done the best job of managing problems in the interception department over the course of the last four games, he’s doing better of late than his counterpart on the Oklahoma State sideline for this coming weekend. Oklahoma State redshirt sophomore quarterback Spencer Sanders had a plethora of interception issues in the last two years.
In just a dozen starts in the last two seasons, Sanders has registered a whopping 13 interceptions and nine fumbles. He’s coughed up the on four occasions in just two games played this season too. Two of those are fumbles and two are interceptions. And Texas is familiar with some of the turnover problems that Sanders had last year.
While Sanders had a great game on the ground last season against the Longhorns (109 rushing yards and one rushing score), he didn’t have a single passing touchdown and tossed two picks. That kicked off a string of three consecutive games for Sanders where he registered just three passing touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Meanwhile, Ehlinger does have five picks this season. But over the course of the last two seasons, Ehlinger has started in 18 games and registered 15 picks and just two fumbles. The touchdown-to-interception ratio for Ehlinger is also much better than Sanders’. Ehlinger registered 3.3 passing touchdowns per interception since the start of 2019. And Sanders registered 1.3 passing touchdowns per interception in the same span of time.
The goal should be clear for the Longhorns defense, put pressure on Sanders and win the turnover battle.
