Texas Football: Could Quinn Ewers decommit from the Longhorns?
If the 2022 Texas football recruiting class and head coach Tom Herman were to lose the commitment of Quinn Ewers, it would be an absolute disaster.
The whispers are starting to get a bit louder around various recruiting sources around the media landscape of late. The top commit in the 2022 Texas football recruiting class for fourth-year head coach Tom Herman, the elite five-star pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers, has some rumors swirling that his commitment might not be too firm right now.
Mike Roach of Horns247 (paid content) spoke on what he knows about this matter regarding Ewers’ commitment status on Oct. 28. Apparently there is nothing confirmed about the status of Ewers’ commitment to the Longhorns, but Roach did state at one point in this piece that he could make a case for the rumors to be true or false and feel good about the argument either way.
What he mentions that is fairly common about a prospect that could be soon opening up his recruitment due to potential coaching instability is that both the Texas staff and Ewers’ camp have gone mostly quiet of late. Ewers was fairly open, along with his camp, leading up to the last week or two (since he originally announced his commitment to Texas back in mid-August) about his pledge to the Longhorns.
As recently as Oct. 26, there was a report from Hookem.com that stated that Ewers was “100% committed” to the Longhorns. Something might have changed since then, but this type of rumor coming about right when a head coach’s seat got very hot likely isn’t a coincidence.
No matter what, the Texas coaching staff should be doing all they can to retain the commitment of Ewers. Losing his commitment, just after they lost the elite four-star Denton-Ryan athlete Billy Bowman Jr. within the last month for the 2021 class, would be incredibly detriment for this team’s future on the recruiting trail.
Ewers ranks as the nation’s No. 2 2022 high school prospect, and the top overall pro-style quarterback and prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks Ewers as the top overall high school prospect in the nation for the 2022 cycle.
Other significant offers that Ewers holds to watch as this situation unfolds came from the Alabama Crimson Tide, Clemson Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oklahoma Sooners, and Texas A&M Aggies. Given recent trends on the recruiting trail for top prospects the Longhorns pursue, it feels like Oklahoma, Alabama, and Ohio State are the biggest thorns in the side of Herman’s staff.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 5 in the nation and remains in the second spot in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. Texas currently holds three commits in their 2022 class, with Ewers as the highest rated by far.
