The USA Today midseason college football awards named the Big 12 and Texas football among their “biggest disappointments” so far.

The results for fourth-year Texas football head coach Tom Herman are definitely not up to par with how expectations made this team out to perform for the 2020 season. Texas currently holds a record of 3-2 (2-2 Big 12) after knocking off the Baylor Bears on Oct. 24 in a home contest, that ended with a final score of 27-16.

Herman and the Longhorns now have one of their most critical games of the season on tap for this weekend, taking on the undefeated and No. 6 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. Texas has a real opportunity to shake up the Big 12 and get back on track. A win over Oklahoma State would do a lot to help push momentum in the right direction and get the Longhorns closer to contending for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game.

But with so much turbulence occurring for the Longhorns so far this season, there’s a lot for this team to reflect on heading into the Oklahoma State game. According to the USA Today midseason awards for 2020, Texas along with a lot of other Big 12 teams were actually named as the “biggest disappointment” halfway through this season.

Paul Myerberg of USA Today was the writer to single out the Big 12, and namely the Longhorns, as the biggest disappointment at this point of the college football season. The other contributing writer to these midseason awards (Erick Smith) actually picked the defending National Champion LSU Tigers as the biggest disappointment at the halfway mark.

Here’s more on what Myerberg had to say on his pick for the biggest disappointment this season.

"The Big 12. Did I mention the conference lost three games to the Sun Belt on a single Saturday? Oklahoma and Texas are already out, Iowa State has two losses, Baylor has taken a step back and the league is pinning almost all of its playoff hopes on No. 6 Oklahoma State. That was not expected."

The two losses on the season so far for Herman and the Longhorns came against the Oklahoma Sooners and TCU Horned Frogs. And the other two wins outside of Baylor came over the Texas Tech Red Raiders and UTEP Miners. Oklahoma was also one of the teams that Myerberg singled out as a reason for Big 12 disappointment. Both Texas and Oklahoma have two losses already this season.
