Things just keep getting worse for head coach Tom Herman and his 2022 Texas football recruiting class, now losing 4-Star WR commit Phaizon Wilson.

All signs are pointing to disaster for fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and his efforts on the trail for Texas football recruiting of late. Both his 2021 and 2022 recruiting classes have provided results that are beyond disaster at this point in time. Absolute disaster struck for Herman on the night of Oct. 28, when the news surfaced that the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers wanted to re-open his recruitment.

In one flail swoop, the Longhorns lost a generational talent at quarterback and saw the after-effect ripple through their 2021 and 2022 recruiting classes. Ewers ranked as the nation’s No. 2 2022 high school prospect, and the top overall pro-style quarterback and prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranked him as the nation’s top 2022 high school prospect.

To make matters even worse, less than 24 hours Herman and the Longhorns had another massive blow dealt to their 2022 class with four-star Lancaster wide receiver Phaizon Wilson decommitting. And who knows how long the Longhorns are going to be able to hang onto the last remaining commit in the 2022 class at the moment, four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau?

Just around 18 hours after Ewers decommitted from Texas and shocked the college football landscape, Wilson announced on his Twitter timeline on the evening of Oct. 29 that he planned to do the same. What the Longhorns are losing in the 6-foot-4 and 210 pound Texas native is the nation’s No. 206 2022 high school prospect, No. 25 wide receiver, and No. 31 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).

Wilson currently holds offers from more than 15 schools. The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Mizzou Tigers, Ole Miss Rebels, SMU Mustangs, Texas A&M Aggies, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.

While it looks like Ewers is trending to land with head coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes after decommitting from Texas, there’s less clarity as to where WIlson could go. It could be a longer process to figure out what is next for Wilson.

It will be really difficult for the Longhorns to keep their focus on the field this weekend as they take on the undefeated and No. 6 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road on Oct. 31. Things are not going well on the field or on the recruiting trail of late for the Horns.
