Texas football and head coach Tom Herman have an important game on tap this weekend against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road.

All of the pressure that is mounting in the last couple of weeks on the shoulders of fourth-year Texas football head coach Tom Herman was really warranted within the last 48-72 hours. Herman has led this Texas team to post a record of 3-2 (2-2 Big 12), coming into a key showdown against longtime head coach Mike Gundy and the undefeated and No. 6 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road in Stillwater on Oct. 31.

The last game for Herman and the Longhorns resulted in a 27-16 win at home back on Oct. 24 over first-year head coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears, by the final score of 27-16. That helped to snap a two-game skid for the Longhorns that started out the month of October with losses to the TCU Horned Frogs and Oklahoma Sooners.

The other two wins on the season so far for the Longhorns came over the UTEP Miners and Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Moreover, what pushed Herman to the brink as Longhorns head coach this week was the already poor result this season compared to preseason expectations as a top 15 team in both major polls. And that was just the reasoning from the Longhorns performance on the field that push all of this pressure on Herman.

Secondly, Herman just lost pretty much his entire 2022 recruiting class. He lost commitments from namely the nation’s top ranked 2022 quarterback prospect, and the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style signal caller Quinn Ewers, along with four-star Lancaster wide receiver Phaizon Wilson.

The lone commit remaining in the Longhorns 2022 class at this point is the four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau. Now missing out on the highest rated commit since Vince Young and all foundations of the 2022 recruiting class, Herman didn’t do himself any favors this week for his hot seat on the recruiting trail.

Earlier this week, CBS Sports analyst and Texas-Ex Brian Jones gave his thoughts on the matter of Herman and his status as the Longhorns head coach. Jones joined up with the 104.9 Austin FM Radio team to share his opinion on Herman. Here’s more on what Jones had to say on the matter (dialogue thanks to 247Sports).

"“Yes, it could happen that quickly,” Jones said. “I’m hearing it’s going to happen that quickly. Even if it doesn’t happen, I’m hearing the die is cast, unfortunately. That’s what they’re saying. That’s the word on the street… I’m not being nonchalant and cavalier about people’s futures because that’s the most difficult portion of our gig is opining on people’s livelihoods, but that’s what I’m hearing, yes.”"

It sounds like Jones thinks that Herman could be out of the door in Austin as soon as after this weekend if the Longhorns can’t muster a good effort and put a scare into Oklahoma State, or pull off the upset outright. That would be a pretty quick turnaround to parting ways with Herman, but the pressure is clearly mounting very fast on him.

Texas is set to kick off at 3 p.m. CT on the road on Oct. 31 to take on Gundy and the Pokes at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater. They come in with two Big 12 losses thus far, and Oklahoma State carries a record of 4-0 (3-0 Big 12) into this game.
