WVU turns Big 12 Football upside down again with big upset over K-State
The standings in the Big 12 football conference saw another big shakeup on the afternoon of Oct. 31, with West Virginia downing Kansas State at home.
The Big 12 football conference is having trouble sticking with any single set of two or three front runners at any point of this season. To start, it looked like the Texas football program and the Oklahoma schools were going to be at the forefront of the Big 12. But that shifted quickly, as fourth-year Texas head coach Tom Herman found himself with two losses, as did Oklahoma, by the time the Red River Rivalry game arrived on Oct. 10.
Heading into a pivotal Oct. 31 Halloweekend slate of games around the Big 12, the front runners in the conference looked to be the No. 16 ranked Kansas State Wildcats and No. 6 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. Kansas State looked to have an easier road to a win this weekend, taking on the 3-2 West Virginia Mountaineers. Oklahoma State was set to take on Texas in the mid-afternoon slate on Oct. 31.
But West Virginia and head coach Neal Brown definitely weren’t ready to just roll over and let Kansas State get the easy win in Morgantown. Kansas State actually entered this game as a five-point underdog against the Mountaineers. West Virginia is starting to look like one of the better teams in the Big 12 of late, and with recent key injuries dealt to head coach Chris Klieman, Kansas State was put in a rough spot heading into the weekend.
Now one of just three ranked teams in the Big 12 heading into Week 9 of the college football season has fallen, throwing the conference into more chaos. And potentially the most crucial upset of the weekend could still be in progress, if Texas can pull it off against Oklahoma State on the same day.
Former transfer quarterback Jarret Doege was huge for the Mountaineers in this win over Kansas State. Doege registered just over 300 passing yards, two touchdowns, and no picks on the day. More than 100 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown from running back Leddie Brown helped push the Mountaineers over the top to get the huge 37-10 convincing home win over the Wildcats.
After the win, Brown, Doege and the Mountaineers move their record to 4-2 (3-2 Big 12) on the season. And they just tossed aside one of just two of the remaining undefeated teams in Big 12 play. If there was chaos throughout the other Power Five conferences, Kansas State still had a chance at the College Football Playoff if they won out.
After the weekend, Oklahoma could once again be one of the two highest ranked teams in the Big 12. Depending on how the game shakes out between Oklahoma State and Texas, the Big 12 could see further shakeups by day’s end.
