Fourth-year Texas football head coach Tom Herman got what he needed over the weekend with a big upset triumph over No. 6 Oklahoma State.

The question that a lot of Texas football fans are going to ask following the huge 41-34 overtime win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the night of Oct. 31 is regarding the status of fourth-year head coach Tom HermanThere might not be a single head coach of any Power Five (or FBS for that matter) team around the country heading into Week 9 of this weird college football season that was on a hotter seat than Herman.

Coming into the weekend, Herman led the Longhorns into this key battle against No. 6 ranked Oklahoma State on the road in Stillwater with a record of 3-2 (2-2 Big 12). They were coming off a much-needed win at home back on Oct. 24 out of the bye week against first-year head coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears, by the final score of 27-16.

That win over Baylor last weekend was Texas’ first double-digit victory over a Big 12 foe since the 2019 regular season finale against the Texas Tech Red Raiders, which capped with the final score of 49-24. So it did look like the Longhorns had a lot of hope heading into this key showdown with longtime head coach Mike Gundy and the Pokes.

It felt like a win over a Big 12 front runner like Oklahoma State is exactly what Herman needed to get some confidence restored in him and his staff coming from the Longhorns side. And while it didn’t come easy, this type of upset win is a potential cornerstone marker for Herman during this roller coaster ride of a 2020 season.

Coming into the weekend, Herman had lost commitments from the most important prospects it seemed in his 2022 recruiting class. It was an embarrassment and a disaster to see the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers and four-star Lancaster wide receiver Phaizon Wilson re-open their recruitments earlier in the week.

Any victory that Herman could get for the Longhorns on the field or on the recruiting trail (or hopefully both) was much needed to cap this inconsistent month of October. At least for now, a marquee victory like the one the Longhorns just got over the Pokes should do to add some patience and security on Herman’s position as Texas head coach.

Texas now takes a record of 4-2 (3-2 Big 12) out of the weekend with this win over Oklahoma State in hand. Herman got exactly what he needed to get this team back on the right track heading into a crucial November slate. Next up for Texas is a Nov. 7 home contest against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
