2) Worst Texas football recruiting disasters for Herman: Missing out on the Brockermeyers

The biggest slam dunk that the Longhorns should’ve had for a pair of elite blue chip prospects in the trenches for the 2021 recruiting cycle lied with the Brockermeyer brothers. Texas had two legacy products to fill out along the offensive line between the elite five-star All Saints Episcopal offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer and the nation’s top rated center James Brockermeyer.

A juiced up recruiting cycle in terms of offensive line talent out of the state of Texas was largely put to waste it seems by Herman and offensive line coach/co-offensive coordinator Herb Hand. They not only missed out on the Brockermeyer brothers, but they also missed five-star Donovan Jackson to Ohio State and might lose four-star Savion Byrd to the Oklahoma Sooners or SMU Mustangs.

The Brockermeyer brothers passed on committing to Texas in favor of taking their talents to Tuscaloosa to join head coach Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. This was a huge miss for the Longhorns.

What they’re missing out on by losing on the race to land Tommy is the nation’s No. 5 2021 high school prospect and the top overall offensive tackle and prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And James ranks as the nation’s No. 183 2021 high school prospect, top overall center, and No. 32 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).

Texas didn’t really get much of a chance to make up ground elsewhere either in terms of filling depth in the trenches on offense.
