1) Worst Texas football recruiting disasters under Herman: 2022 class falling apart

By far the most notable detriment to the Longhorns program recently under Herman’s direction on the recruiting trail was losing the commitments of two of their three big pieces of the 2022 class. Last week, Texas saw the first major domino fall for their 2022 class crumbling apart with the decommitment of the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Then to add more fuel to the fire, the Longhorns also saw the four-star 6-foot-4 Lancaster wide receiver Phaizon Wilson announce his decommitment from the 2022 class. Wilson was the first commit in the 2022 class, and was a big part of building the receiving corps out for the future. And depending on how the rest of this season shakes out under Herman, Texas might still have a chance to get him back in that class.

However, all indicators point to Ewers eventually flipping his commitment from the Longhorns to join second-year head coach Ryan Day and Ohio State. Texas could also see other key targets of their 2022 class lose interest in coming to the Forty Acres with Ewers leaning to the Buckeyes. That list could include prospects like Wilson, five-star wide receiver Caleb Burton, and five-star cornerback Domani Jackson, among others.

What Texas is losing after the decommitment from Ewers is the nation’s No. 2 2022 high school prospect, and the top overall pro-style quarterback and prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks Ewers as the nation’s top overall 2022 prospect. It’s hard to quantify how impactful losing the commitment of Ewers will be over the long haul for the Longhorns.
