Texas Football: 3 problematic Mountaineers for the Longhorns
1) Problematic Mountaineers for Texas football: Darius Stills
The West Virginia defense has greatly improved in spots under-the-radar this season. As a whole, West Virginia might be one of the most improved teams in the Big 12 so far this fall. But it’s not getting all that much attention due to all of the chaos transpiring around the Big 12, specifically with Texas and the Oklahoma schools.
So far this season, West Virginia ranks at No. 19 in the FBS in points allowed per game (19.8). They ranked 73rd in the FBS last season in the same stat category, allowing 28.8 points per game. That’s a marked improvement that could be a tough hill to climb for an already inconsistent Texas offense at times this season.
One specific player on the defensive side of the ball to watch for West Virginia in this game will be the sizable 6-foot-1 and 285 pound senior defensive tackle Darius Stills. There’s a lot of breakthrough players to watch on this West Virginia defense, but Stills could cause some chaos in the trenches for the Longhorns offensive line.
So far this season, Still has registered 16 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and even one interception. That now brings him up to 72 total tackles, 22.0 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, one pick, two pass deflections, and two forced fumbles, in his four years playing for West Virginia to date. On the season so far, Stills also doesn’t have any penalties called against him, just one missed tackle, and 14 additional quarterback hurries.
