Texas Football: Ayodele Adeoye out for season with injury
Bad news for the Texas football program heading into an important game weekend, redshirt sophomore LB Ayodele Adeoye could be out for the season.
Just devastating news for a promising linebacker out of the Texas football program that emerged this week. According to a report from Horns247 (paid content), redshirt sophomore linebacker and former four-star recruit Ayodele Adeoye is likely to miss the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Adeoye had only played in three games this season for fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and first-year defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash thus far. His last game action came in the win over the Baylor Bears, by the final score of 27-16 at home back on Oct. 24. All three of the games he played in this season came during the Big 12 slate.
But in the win over Baylor, Adeoye was able to register a season high five tackles (four solo and one assisted). On the season to date, he’s registered 10 total tackles (six solo and four assisted). That brings him to a mark of 55 total tackles, three tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, and two pass deflections.
Adeoye spent much of his college career to date injured. That’s a shame for him, especially since the Longhorns are increasingly thin among the linebackers. This will put more pressure on the shoulders of junior linebacker Juwan Mitchell, who had a few minor bruises at times in the last two years.
The lose to the linebackers will hurt the Longhorns, but Adeoye hasn’t remained consistently healthy for a while now. The play of other linebackers like Mitchell, DeMarvion Overshown, and the star of the group Joseph Ossai, needs to continue to tick up.
But the good news in this regard is that the Longhorns got a nice outing from their front seven in general in the Oct. 31 upset win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road in overtime. Texas got career days out of the likes of Ossai and senior defensive end Ta’Quon Graham. If they can continue to get that type of production out of other leaders in the front seven, losing Adeoye for the season can be shouldered by the rest of the guys.
Up next for the Longhorns is a key Nov. 7 home contest against second-year head coach Neal Brown and the West Virginia Mountaineers. Texas comes into the game against West Virginia with a record of 4-2 (3-2 Big 12), after their win over previously No. 6 ranked Oklahoma State last weekend.
