2) Takeaways from Texas football’s win over WVU: Sam Ehlinger keeps taking care of the ball

As the results in the final stat line of senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger get seemingly worse week-over-week, the Longhorns overall results in the win column are getting better. What looks to be the ultimate recipe to victory for the Longhorns this fall is Ehlinger taking care of the football and not making big mistakes late in games.

He made a few smart plays in the fourth quarter to get the Longhorns this 17-13 narrow victory over West Virginia. And this was a really difficult defense for Ehlinger to face. West Virginia is tops in the Big 12, allowing now under 19.5 points per game. Ehlinger did well to find his sophomore wide receiver Jake Smith for the touchdown that won this game.

All that Ehlinger registered in this game was 15 completions on 31 passing attempts, good for 184 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also added 39 rushing yards on 12 tries. As I mentioned before, the key part of Ehlinger’s stat line in each of the last two games was the zero picks.

Ehlinger has now gone more than seven quarters in a row without an interception. His last pick came around the middle of the game in the win over Baylor back on Oct. 24. Hopefully this streak of tossing no picks is something that Ehlinger can carry through the end of the Nov. 21 matchup out of the bye week against the Kansas Jayhawks.
