Texas Football: Neal Brown upset about missed PI call late in game
West Virginia head coach Neal Brown was not pleased with the call that went the way of Texas football in their Nov. 7 win by a score of 17-13.
One of the key moments from the Texas football win on this day over the stingy West Virginia Mountaineers came in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. West Virginia was driving on the Texas defense late in the fourth quarter, and was trying to take the lead. Former Bowling Green transfer quarterback Jarret Doege tried to find wide receiver Ali Jennings in the end zone to get the lead over Texas.
On what would wind up being the final play of the game for West Virginia’s offense, there was a lot of contact exchanged between Jennings and senior defensive back Chris Brown. Despite the contact, the refs held their flags, and the Longhorns would take over on downs.
The drive that followed for the Longhorns saw star senior quarterback and breakthrough true freshman running back Bijan Robinson ultimately seal the win. A 35-yard catch from Robinson would help bleed out the clock and bring home the narrow 17-13 win for the Longhorns over the Mountaineers in this key Nov. 7 showdown.
But that one final offensive play near the goal line for the Mountaineers really upset second-year former Troy Trojans head coach Neal Brown. After the game, Brown commented on the play stating the following.
"The PI stuff, I’m not asking for bailouts. I got to look at it. I know they got a couple and we didn’t. That’s all I know."
Brown was visibly upset about the call just after it happened. There was a lot of contact from Brown in the end zone, but the call ultimately didn’t help the Mountaineers and they turned it over on downs.
And that wasn’t the only call that Brown was upset about that didn’t go West Virginia’s way. A fumble earlier in the second half did go the Longhorns way, despite the intuition that Brown apparently had on the sidelines.
Texas now moves to a record of 5-2 (4-2 Big 12) on the season after getting this big four point win over West Virginia. The Longhorns now head into their bye week on a high note, with a three-game winning streak building up for their Nov. 21 matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks.
