Former Texas football transfer Bru McCoy shines in USC debut
The former highly coveted five-star Texas football commit and RS FR USC wide receiver Bru McCoy shined in his debut on Nov. 7.
One of the worst storylines that went on throughout a good portion of last offseason for head coach Tom Herman and the Texas football program involved the weird transfer saga of the now USC Trojans talented freshman wide receiver/athlete Bru McCoy. All in a span of less than three months, McCoy transferred from USC to Texas, and then went back to join head coach Clay Helton and the Trojans after the conclusion of spring camp.
Coming out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, CA, the 6-foot-3 and 220 pound former five-star recruit McCoy was a highly sought after prospect in the Longhorns 2019 recruiting class. He ranked as the nation’s No. 9 2019 high school prospect, top overall athlete, and No. 2 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite).
McCoy also is slotted well inside one of the top 250 247Sports Composite prospects of all-time (or at least in the modern era of recruiting rankings).
He also held offers from the likes of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Washington Huskies, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma Sooners, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, Tennessee Volunteers, and Texas A&M Aggies.
With the PAC-12 kicking off their action this fall over the weekend, McCoy finally had the opportunity to make his Trojans debut. He had to sit out last season, leaving him still without any meaningful game action heading into this season.
In his USC debut, McCoy helped this offense rally late and get a big comeback win at home over head coach Herm Edwards and the Arizona State Sun Devils. He registered five catches for 51 yards (10.2 yards per catch), good for one touchdown reception. McCoy also helped recover a fumble at a key time to make sure that USC had kept a possession.
McCoy’s touchdown catch in this narrow 28-27 comeback victory for the Trojans came late in the fourth quarter to bring the game within six points. That was one of two passing touchdowns on the day for quarterback Kedon Slovis, who also finished the day with 381 passing yards and one interception.
USC holds a record of 1-0 (1-0 PAC-12) after their win to open up the season over Arizona State. Meanwhile, the Longhorns rounded out the weekend with a big narrow win over the West Virginia Mountaineers at home on Nov. 7, by the final score of 17-13.
