ESPN projects Texas football to Texas Bowl following win over WVU
The latest postseason projections for the Texas football program heading out of Week 10 still aren’t that prominent compared to preseason expectations.
A big win for the Texas football program and fourth-year head coach Tom Herman last weekend over second-year head coach Neal Brown and the West Virginia Mountaineers helped build their winning streak to three games heading into the bye week. Texas got this victory over West Virginia at home on Nov. 7 by the final score of 17-13.
Another narrow victory for Herman and the Longhorns pushed them to a record of 5-2 (4-2 Big 12), with the No. 21 slot in this week’s AP Poll (No. 24 in the Coaches Poll), to head into the bye week on a high note. The other two wins that helped build the Longhorns current three-game winning streak came over the previously No. 6 ranked and undefeated Oklahoma State Cowboys and the rebuilding Baylor Bears.
Texas got the win over the Pokes back on Oct. 31 on the road in upset fashion, by the final score of 41-34 in overtime. And the win over first-year head coach Dave Aranda and his up and down Baylor squad came back on Oct. 24 at home, by the final score of 27-16.
So where are the Longhorns projected for the postseason after building this three-game winning streak?
The latest postseason projections from ESPN heading out of Week 10 of the college football season had the Longhorns in the Texas Bowl. That places the Longhorns either against the Arkansas Razorbacks or LSU Tigers, depending on which of the two projections you look at from ESPN this week.
Kyle Bonagura had Texas facing first-year head coach Sam Pittman and the upstart Razorbacks. And Mark Schlabach had Texas facing the defending National Champions LSU in the Texas Bowl.
No Big 12 teams were projected to get into the College Football Playoff this week, which is no surprise given how the conference has cannibalized itself this season. The Oklahoma schools had a split projection to get into the Cotton Bowl, which could be the best case scenario for the Big 12 Champion this year.
Heading out of the bye week, Herman and the Longhorns are set to take on the lowly Kansas Jayhawks on the road in Lawrence on Nov. 21. They still have games remaining against the Iowa State Cyclones, Kansas State Wildcats, and Kansas for this regular season.
