Texas Football: 3 most disappointing players halfway through 2020
2) Disappointing Texas football players halfway through 2020: Cade Brewer
This looked like it could be the season where the Longhorns finally got a solid full body of work and breakthrough from the former three-star recruit and 6-foot-4 and 255 pound senior tight end Cade Brewer. The presumed starting tight end for the Longhorns is splitting a lot of snaps now with fellow former three-star recruit and sophomore breakthrough Jared Wiley.
The towering 6-foot-7 and 255 pound Wiley proved he’s ready to take on a bigger role this season, in his second year getting actual playing time for Texas. Wiley has registered seven catches for 152 receiving yards (21.7 yards per catch) and no receiving touchdowns in the passing game this season. He’s also been a very steady presence in run and pass blocking when called upon.
Meanwhile, the same could not be said for Brewer’s showings so far this season. Brewer has registered 81 receiving yards on 10 catches (8.1 yards per catch), good for one touchdown catch. He did that in five games played. While Brewer does not have a single drop or fumble coughed up to his name so far this season, he’s not been very good in blocking schemes and he had two costly penalties called against him.
We are slowly seeing Brewer get phased out of this offense it looks like, and Wiley taking that role of the primary tight end in passing and blocking schemes. Brewer is having one of the least productive seasons of his college career to date, exactly when the Longhorns need his support in the passing and blocking schemes.
