True freshman Texas football running back Bijan Robinson earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors after a big performance in the win over West Virginia.

After a sensational performance over the weekend for the former highly coveted five-star Salpointe Catholic High School recruit and true freshman running back Bijan Robinson, he’s getting some much-deserved accolades coming his way. In the win for the Texas football program over the rapidly improving West Virginia Mountaineers and second-year former Troy Trojans head coach Neal Brown last weekend, Robinson had his best game of the season to date.

Texas got the win over West Virginia at home back on Nov. 7, by the narrow final score of 17-13. The win moved fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and his Longhorns to a record of 5-2 (4-2 Big 12) heading into the bye week. And Texas holds the No. 21 spot in this week’s AP Poll and the No. 24 spot in the Coaches Poll.

Moreover, a big driving force to the Longhorns hanging on to get the four-point victory over the Mountaineers was the breakthrough performance of Robinson. He registered 113 rushing yards on 12 attempts (9.4 yards per carry), and no rushing scores. Robinson added 38 receiving yards  on two catches (19.0 yards per catch), with no touchdown catches.

For his efforts in the win over West Virginia, Robinson wound up getting his first Big 12 Newcomer of the Week nod of the season. This was his first 100 yard rushing performance in a single game in his college career. And while Robinson is still without his first rushing and/or receiving touchdown of the season, it should come very soon.

In the win over West Virginia in particular, Robinson was huge to spark the offense on the first and last drives of the game. He put up a 54 yard run on the first drive, giving Texas their initial points in this game. And he delivered a clutch 35 yard catch to put the win on ice for the Longhorns on their final drive.

On the season in total, Robinson has now registered 294 rushing yards on 51 attempts (5.8 yards per carry) and 105 receiving yards on nine catches (11.7 yards per carry). Robinson is emerging as one of the real skill position threats that could be a problem for the rest of the Big 12 for a good while now.
