Texas Football: Keondre Coburn’s status up in the air vs. Kansas
Redshirt sophomore Texas football defensive tackle Keondre Coburn still has an uncertain status for KU after sustaining an ankle injury in the win over WVU.
The most notable injury that arose for the Texas football program on either side of the ball in the big win over the West Virginia Mountaineers at home last weekend went to redshirt sophomore defensive tackle and former four-star recruit Keondre Coburn. The sizable 6-foot-2 and 350 pound defensive line anchor came up limping after a play against West Virginia and had to be taken to the locker room soon thereafter.
Coburn didn’t return for the Longhorns in that 17-13 narrow win over West Virginia back on Nov. 7. So the question remains heading into the Longhorns second bye week of the Big 12 schedule this season, will Coburn return for the road game against the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence on Nov. 21?
A report from Horns247 on Nov. 10 (paid content) mentioned that Coburn does have an ankle sprain that he suffered last weekend. But the MRI he had following the game didn’t show any torn ligaments, which is very good news.
Coburn’s status for the Kansas game is reportedly still uncertain at this point, but we should have more clarity heading out of the bye week. If nothing else, the bye week came at a good time for Coburn, among other Longhorns, to recover from their bumps and bruises (and more major injuries) from the last couple of weeks.
If Coburn is out against Kansas, or is at least limited on snaps, we’ll see sophomore defensive lineman T’Vondre Sweat get more game action. So far this season, Sweat registered 18.0 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one pass deflection, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Sweat was really productive in the game action he did get so far this season. Meanwhile, Coburn registered 17.0 total tackles, two tackles for loss, and one pass deflection, in six games played. Both Coburn and Sweat provided an underrated solid presence in the middle of the Texas defensive line through seven games played this season.

Texas now carries a record of 5-2 (4-2 Big 12) after the four-point victory over West Virginia on Nov. 7. That gives fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns the No. 21 slot in the AP Poll and No. 24 in the Coaches Poll heading into the bye week.
