The results on the trail of late do not show a 2021 Texas football recruiting class that is trending up for head coach Tom Herman.

The days are narrowing down for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class to make a huge difference in the national class rankings ahead of the start of the Early Signing Period (set for Dec. 16). There is just over one month before the Early Signing Period arrives, and the momentum is not going in the direction of fourth-year Texas head coach Tom Herman on the recruiting trail of late.

In the Longhorns 2021 recruiting class, they lost a huge commitment from the highly coveted four-star Denton-Ryan athlete Billy Bowman Jr. And that carried into the loss of a potential once-in-a-generation quarterback in their 2022 recruiting class, with the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers decommitting back on Oct. 28.

They also lost the commitment of the lengthy and skilled four-star Lancaster wide receiver Phaizaon Wilson in the 2022 class, following the decommitment of Ewers last month. Wilson was the initial commit in the Longhorns 2022 class, so that is obviously a pivotal loss in conjunction with Ewers.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 17 in the nation, and remains in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas currently holds commitments from 17 prospects in their 2021 class. The highest rated commit at the moment is the elite five-star Denton-Ryan athlete/weak-side defensive end Ja’Tavion Sanders.

Texas also hasn’t landed a commit in their 2021 class since Sep. 25, when they nabbed a pledge from the under-the-radar three-star Strake Jesuit offensive tackle Max Merril. Something has to give in the near future on the recruiting trail for Herman and the Longhorns. But there’s also a lot to reflect on from here on out in terms of the insane amount of talent that Texas missed out on in-state for this cycle.

Here’s a look into the four biggest in-state recruiting misses for Herman and the Longhorns in their 2021 class.
