2) In-state ’21 Texas football recruiting misses

The second of two big time Texas targets/former commits on this list that the Crimson Tide took out of Herman’s grasp is also likely the most impactful and detrimental miss of the 2021 cycle, with five-star All Saints Episcopal offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer. And that doesn’t even go to mention the fact that Texas lost both Tommy and his brother, four-star center James Brockermeyer.

The Brockermeyer brothers were a highly coveted package deal, with each prospect ranking as the top at his position for this recruiting cycle.

These two are legacies of the Longhorns, as their dad played at Texas before making his way to the NFL. Landing a commitment from the Brockermeyer brothers really seemed like a slam dunk at one point for Herman and offensive line coach/co-offensive coordinator Herb Hand. But that’s not what happened back in July.

Tommy and James announced their commitment to the Crimson Tide back on July 17.

What Texas lost at least by missing out on Tommy was the nation’s No. 5 2021 high school prospect, and the top overall offensive tackle and prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 12 high school prospect, No. 2 offensive tackle, and the No. 2 prospect out of Texas.

Tommy chose to commit to Alabama over offers from Texas and 23 other schools. The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet included the Clemson Tigers, Baylor Bears, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Oregon, Stanford Cardinal, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and TCU Horned Frogs.
