It looks like the Texas football coaching staff is hitting the NCAA Transfer Portal early this year, targeting former Kansas State DB Jonathan Alexander.

It looks like fourth-year Texas football head coach Tom Herman is getting ahead of the game this year in the NCAA Transfer Portal, which is likely a very smart move. Texas is reportedly (Horns247 paid content) in contact with the former three-star JUCO transfer recruit and the senior Kansas State Wildcats safety Jonathan Alexander.

Heading into next offseason, the Longhorns could be losing the likes of junior safety Caden Sterns, redshirt senior safety Chris Brown, and even junior B.J. Foster (if he were to declare early for the 2021 NFL Draft). Although the most likely of the bunch to leave for the NFL Draft next offseason will be Sterns and Brown.

Considering the Longhorns could be losing their two starting safeties prior to the start of the 2021 season, turning to the transfer portal for immediate help makes a lot of sense. And this move from the Longhorns to get in contact with Alexander likely has a lot to do with the first-year defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash. He turned to the transfer portal often for help on the defensive side of the ball during his time as the Rutgers head coach.

The report from Horns247 does indicate that the Texas coaching staff reached out to Alexander and expressed their interest in seeing what he brings to the table. That piece shows that Alexander confirmed the report himself.

Alexander is also reportedly getting interest from the likes of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Florida State Seminoles, Oklahoma State Cowboys, TCU Horned Frogs, Arkansas Razorbacks, SMU Mustangs, UCLA Bruins, and Arizona Wildcats. Texas appears to be just one of a number of suitors interested in seeing what Alexander brings to the table for them out of the transfer portal.

And there is a connection mentioned in this piece between the Longhorns and Alexander. His trainer in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Christian White, also works with Texas commit and four-star safety JD Coffey.

Alexander sat out of the 2020 season in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. He’ll have immediately eligibility to play next year out of the transfer portal.

In his inaugural season last year with Kansas State, Alexander played in 11 games. He registered 25 total tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, two pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery (which he returned for a touchdown).

The 6-foot-3 and 210 pound experienced safety Alexander was a gem find off the JUCO market in Kansas State’s 2019 recruiting class. Coming out of Kilgore Junior College in Fort Worth, TX, Alexander was an underrated three-star safety recruit. He ranked as the nation’s No. 231 2019 JUCO prospect, No. 11 safety, and No. 15 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).

Next. Bold predictions for Tom Herman for the rest of the 2020 season. dark

If the Longhorns want safety help out of the transfer portal heading into next offseason, a few other names to watch could include the likes of Florida State’s Cyrus Fagan, East Carolina’s Tank Robinson, and North Carolina’s Bryson Richardson, among others. Alexander should top that list of potential safety targets out of the portal at the moment, though.
