A former commit of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class, 5-Star QB Quinn Ewers, feels that postseason success was a game-changer for him.

A massive blow to the 2022 Texas football recruiting class was dealt back on the night of Oct. 28, when they lost the commitment of the nation’s top ranked 2022 high school quarterback prospect. Fourth-year Texas head coach Tom Herman potentially lost a once in a generation type of quarterback talent when the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers reopened his recruitment last month.

And Herman and the Longhorns got the news they didn’t want to hear on Nov. 19, heading into the weekend on the wrong foot. Texas got word that Ewers was going to in effect flip his commitment from their 2022 recruiting class to join second-year head coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The writing was definitely on the wall that Ewers was going to take his talents to Columbus and commit to Ohio State since he reopened his recruitment late last month. This uber-talented 6-foot-3 and 195 pound signal caller is something that Ohio State can build their 2022 recruiting class around. And Texas is left searching for answers for how to rebuild the foundation in their 2022 class.

However, what the Buckeyes are getting out of Ewers is the nation’s No. 2 2022 high school prospect, and the top overall pro-style quarterback and prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s top 2022 high school prospect.

Ewers wound up taking his talents to Ohio State over offers from Texas and more than 25 other schools. The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oklahoma Sooners, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Penn State Nittany Lions, Tennessee Volunteers, Texas A&M Aggies, and USC Trojans.

It is interesting some of the touting that Ewers gave the Ohio State coaching staff following the announcement of his commitment to the Buckeyes heading into the weekend. He opened up on the decision he made to commit to Ohio State with Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports on Nov. 19. Here’s more on what he had to say on the matter.

"“Just their success and ability to go to the college football playoff every year,” Ewers said.“The main thing I look for when I’m talking to a coach or looking at a University is development of past quarterbacks and who was as successful as they were in years past? I’ve known those guys for a while. I went up there in eighth grade (the family has a cabin in the Columbus area), that’s when they offered me and ever since then I’ve kept a good relationship and it’s been fun talking to those guys. Coach (Corey) Dennis is really fun to talk to. He’s younger, easier to connect with and Coach Day as well, those guys are really cool.”"

Ohio State is now up to eight commitments in their 2022 recruiting class, with the latest and highest rated one coming from Ewers. They have two five-star commits in the 2022 class, and the Longhorns are left with just one commit in total in their 2022 class at the moment.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 26 in the nation, with their lone commit remaining as four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau. Meanwhile, Ohio State now holds the top spot in the national class rankings for the 2022 cycle.
