Texas Football: 3 early DB transfer targets for the Longhorns
A potential path for the Texas football program to add depth to the defensive backfield next offseason is through the NCAA Transfer Portal.
An apparent early area of interest for fourth-year Texas football head coach Tom Herman and first-year defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash in the NCAA Transfer Portal for next offseason of late is in the defensive backfield. Ash is likely trying to get an early start on filling out his secondary in the most efficient manner possible well before next offseason officially arrives.
One of the most notable early targets in the transfer portal for the Longhorns is the former Kansas State Wildcats three-star JUCO recruit and senior safety Jonathan Alexander. After opting out of playing in this college football season for Kansas State in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic, Alexander put his name in the transfer portal a few months back.
While Alexander is a solid early transfer portal target for the Longhorns coaching staff to have in mind, there’s more names already out there that could be worth looking into. Texas could be losing the likes of redshirt senior safety Chris Brown and junior Caden Sterns to the NFL Draft next year, which would void them of their two starters at the position.
The cornerback position is also much thinner after Texas lost sophomore Kenyatta Watson II to the transfer portal, and eventually the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets back in his home state. They also lost fourth-year cornerback Kobe Boyce last offseason as he retired from football for mental health reasons.
So where can the Longhorns look in the transfer portal around two months ahead of the 2021 offseason to fill out cornerback and/or safety depth for next season? Here’s a deeper look into three potential early targets.
