Texas Football: Sam Ehlinger does not regret ‘we’re back’ comments
Senior star Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger made some unforgettable comments following their win in the Sugar Bowl over Georgia two seasons ago.
It was a comment that made waves across the college football landscape two years ago. Then breakthrough star sophomore Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger stated that ‘we’re back’ after a win in the Sugar Bowl over the Georgia Bulldogs to cap the 2018 season.
That 2018 campaign was a special one for head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns. It was by a good margin the best season that Texas had to date under Herman. While 2020 could still be solid for Herman and the Longhorns, it would take a lot for them to match what they did in 2018. Down the stretch, Texas would have to be really good to at least one up the result from 2018.
However, Ehlinger set high expectations for what lied ahead for the Texas program with his comments following the 2018-19 Sugar Bowl win over Georgia. That statement created a lot of memes and jokes that would come about the following two years whenever the Longhorns had a major letdown.
Granted Ehlinger has not waived in the last two seasons, holding very strong for this Longhorns offense. He is one of the FBS leaders in total touchdowns this season, and had the most efficient year of his career through the air during the 2019 campaign.
Why the subject of the comments from Ehlinger in the Sugar Bowl two years ago came up in the first place was a tweet from Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesmen on the morning of Nov. 24. He apparently asked Ehlinger if he regrets saying that Texas is back in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans two years ago.
The response from Ehlinger is that “he doesn’t regret saying” we’re back. But it sounds like he also probably wouldn’t do it again.
There is still the possibility that the Longhorns can make it to a New Year’s Six Bowl this year. They would have to continue to stay hot down the stretch and win all four of their remaining games, assuming they make it to the Big 12 Championship Game.
Remaining for the rest of the regular season, Texas has three games coming against the Kansas schools and No. 13 ranked Iowa State Cyclones. The No. 17 ranked Longhorns (in the initial College Football Playoff Rankings release on Nov. 24) would have to win those three games likely to even get a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game on Dec. 19.
Texas carries a record of 5-2 (4-2 Big 12) into their Black Friday showdown on Nov. 27 against Iowa State. Kick off is set for 11 a.m. CT on Black Friday at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium for Texas in taking on head coach Matt Campbell and a very good Cyclones team.
