The direction that the Texas football program is headed for the rest of the 2020 season is largely dependent on Friday’s game against Iowa State.

There is a huge looming showdown on tap for the Big 12 this week between Texas football and the No. 13 ranked Iowa State Cyclones. No. 17 ranked Texas is coming off their de facto double bye week looking to continue their quest to make an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game for the first time since the 2018 season.

Meanwhile, Iowa State and head coach Matt Campbell are looking to make the program’s first ever appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game this season. Texas comes into this game with a record of 5-2 (4-2 Big 12), with their last game resulting in a narrow 17-13 win at home back on Nov. 7 over the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Iowa State comes into this game with a record of 6-2 (6-1 Big 12), with their only two losses on the season coming at the hands of the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns and Oklahoma State Cowboys. Their last game resulted in a 45-0 drubbing of head coach Chris Klieman and the Kansas State Wildcats at home at Jack Trice Stadium on Nov. 21.

Whoever wins this game between the Cyclones and Longhorns will be in a great position for a rematch with the Oklahoma Sooners in the Big 12 Championship Game. There is also a lot on the line for senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger and head coach Tom Herman. These two need a win to keep the momentum going in the right direction for the Longhorns.

Beat Iowa State, and Texas just has to get through the Kansas schools to win out for the remainder of this regular season. Here’s a look three reasons why the Longhorns could dominate the Cyclones on Black Friday in this week’s impactful showdown.
