Texas Football: Herman says future is not up to him to decide
Texas football head coach Tom Herman doesn’t look to be in a good place at all following his team’s agonizing three-point loss to Iowa State.
There’s a lot of chatter going on once again surrounding the hot seat of fourth-year Texas football head coach Tom Herman. Following No. 17 ranked Texas’ devastating 23-20 last second loss at the hands of the No. 13 ranked Iowa State Cyclones at home on Senior Day on Black Friday, the whispers started to become shouts once again surrounding Herman’s hot seat discussion.
Herman and the Longhorns had a chance at multiple points against Iowa State to pull away and take control of the game. And usually the Longhorns are the best when it matters most down the stretch. But Texas wasn’t able to capitalize on either and they wound up falling short to head coach Matt Campbell and Iowa State by just a three-point margin.
Iowa State got a touchdown from star sophomore running back Breece Hall in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter, giving them the lead 23-20. Senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger wasn’t able to put the Longhorns in a good enough position to get the game-tying field goal with junior kicker Cameron Dicker.
This all too common theme this fall of the Longhorns playing games too close, and falling short in a lot of them, is getting very old for this fan base very fast. All three of the Longhorns losses on the season so far came down either to the last minute, or to overtime, to decide the outcome. Texas had the opportunity against Iowa State and the TCU Horned Frogs to pull away at different points of those games, and they just weren’t able to get it done.
With the seat heating up more and more this weekend surrounding Herman, he talked on the matter following this loss to Iowa State. Herman state the following regarding his future at Texas: “that’s not for me to decide”. That’s not a confidence inspiring response from Herman. Here’s more on what Herman reportedly had to say on the matter following this loss to Iowa State.
"“That’s not for me to decide,” Herman said. “I feel like where we have the program right now compared to where it was when we took over, the future is very bright. We’ve won a lot of big games in our time here. (Texas) didn’t win the conference championship two years ago when we made the game, played for an opportunity to go to that game today and lost in the last couple of minutes. But I feel great about the trajectory of our program and where we’re headed, and the things that are on the horizon.”"
Herman didn’t have much to say that brings all that much hope for the future of the Longhorns program, which is a known storyline at this point in time. The decommitment of the nation’s top ranked 2022 quarterback prospect, Southlake Carroll pro-style signal caller Quinn Ewers, is still fresh on the minds of Longhorns fans. That doesn’t bode well for the future of Herman on the recruiting trail.
The lack of consistent success on the field and on the recruiting trail of late for the Longhorns will start to add up for Herman. It won’t be all that long until he time on the Forty Acres is over if these disappointing losses in multiple phases of the program keep piling up.
With the loss to Iowa State, Texas moves to a record of 5-3 (4-3 Big 12). Texas’ hopes to make it to the Big 12 Championship Game are all but gone at this point. Meanwhile, Iowa State moves to a record of 7-2 (7-1 Big 12) with their conference title aspirations well within reach.
