3) Texas basketball Maui Invitational bold predictions

Courtney Ramey’s hot streak continues

If the Longhorns are going to get a solid result out of the Maui Invitational, it will have to be through the elevated play of their starting backcourt. Senior Matt Coleman and junior Courtney Ramey were good for this team in the season opener. Namely Ramey kept the hot streak going that he formed down the stretch last season.

Ramey played in 31 games during the shortened 2019-20 college hoops season for the Longhorns (all but three of which he started in). And he averaged 10.9 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.1 blocks. Ramey shot 40.1 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 70.9 percent from the free-throw line.

And in the season-opening win over UTRGV, Ramey registered 20 points, five rebounds, seven assists, one steal, one block, and four turnovers. And he shot 63.6 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 80.0 percent from the free-throw line. Outside of the turnovers, that is a really good start for Ramey to the season.

Given the way that Ramey was playing down the stretch last season, especially amid Texas’ five-game winning streak near the end of the run, it’s not out of the question that this hot streak goes into the Maui Invitational. Davidson allowed more than 67 points per game in each of the last two seasons, so there’s more reason to expect another big game from Ramey.
