What couldn’t happen for the Texas football program if they wanted to make the Big 12 Championship Game did against Iowa State on Black Friday.

Exactly what we expected to happen, in a way, when No. 17 ranked Texas football took on the No. 13 ranked Iowa State Cyclones on Black Friday on Senior Day, was what happened at DKR. Texas got a real shot at extending their winning streak to four games and thus pushing the envelope on their chances to get a berth in the Big 12 Championship Game, come Dec. 19.

Fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns couldn’t get it done in the end, though. Head coach Matt Campbell and his Iowa State team continued their hot streak of late, and kept their spot atop the Big 12 standings heading into the month of December. At this point, it looks like the Oklahoma Sooners and Iowa State will be the two teams squaring off in the Big 12 Championship Game next month.

Texas fell short at the hands of Iowa State heading into the post-Thanksgiving weekend, by the narrow final score of 23-20. That was agonizingly close to the same score that the Longhorns had in their loss on the road in Ames to Iowa State last season. Iowa State was able to get a touchdown on their final offensive drive of the game from star sophomore running back Breece Hall.

That extended the Cyclones lead to three points, and senior star Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger couldn’t lead his team to get in touchdown or field goal position to tie or win the game in the last minute. This was a tough finish for Ehlinger in what is likely to be his final game at DKR in his college career.

Here’s a look into three overreactions from the Longhorns three-point loss to Iowa State on Black Friday.
