3) Overreactions from Texas football loss to ISU

Brennan Eagles and Jake Smith emerging as top two receivers

At the outset of this season, it looked like there could be any number of wide receivers that stepped up to the forefront and led the way in the passing game for Ehlinger. But the receiver that got off to the hottest start this fall, by a good margin, was the redshirt sophomore breakthrough wideout Joshua Moore.

Since Moore’s hot start in the first three or four games this fall, he’s dealt with injury troubles and his production fell off. He gave way to the likes of junior wide receiver Brennan Eagles and sophomore Jake Smith in the last three or four games in terms of who the top producers are in this receiving corps.

The 6-foot-4 and 230 pound sizable outside receiver Eagles is really stepping up his game of late. In the loss to Iowa State, Eagles registered five catches for a game-high 142 receiving yards (28.4 yards per catch) and no touchdowns. On the season in total now, Eagles has registered 24 catches for 428 receiving yards and five touchdown catches.

Meanwhile, Smith is also starting to improve his production of late. He’s definitely on pace to improve off his stat line from last season, in terms of his numbers per game. In the loss to Iowa State, Smith registered 47 receiving yards on two catches, with no receiving touchdowns. He’s now registered 19 catches for 239 receiving yards, and three touchdown catches.
