The job security of fourth-year Texas football head coach Tom Herman might have a baseline decision in place in the near future.

The way that the Texas football program was able to make its way in the Big 12 standings in the last few weeks was pretty impressive. Head coach Tom Herman and his team were making real headway to recovering from a tough 2-2 (2-1 Big 12) start through mid-October. Heading into this critical matchup with the No. 13 ranked Iowa State Cyclones on Senior Day and Black Friday, Texas needed to extend their winning streak to four games to keep their Big 12 Title hopes alive.

Herman and the Longhorns couldn’t get it done in the end against head coach Matt Campbell and the Cyclones on Nov. 27. Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium wound up being a sight of sorrow for the Longhorns, instead of one of joy in the final home game of the regular season.

Moreover, the chatter started to resurface with the tough loss at the last second for Herman. The loss to Iowa State moves Texas to a record of 5-3 (4-3 Big 12). And the Longhorns have very slight hopes to make it to the Big 12 Championship Game at this point in time.

The loss to Iowa State didn’t do anything but hurt Herman’s chances to return as the Longhorns head coach for the 2021 season. He’s not finding much consistency at all on the field or on the recruiting trail right now.

And according to a Horns247 report (paid content), the discussion of what will happen with Herman starts “in the next few days”. It mentioned that the UT administrators and boosters are about to discuss what is best for this program, and what Herman can do for its future.

Nothing in that piece really mentioned that Herman was going to be fired next week, but the discussion starting could be the first real domino to fall in the Texas coaching carousel. Herman not really having a ceiling of more than eight wins this fall isn’t a good look for him, given that’s how the team finished up last season.

Next up for Herman and the Longhorns is a matchup with head coach Chris Klieman and the Kansas State Wildcats on Dec. 5 on the road in Manhattan. A loss in that game, and it feels like Herman’s time as the Texas head coach is really doomed.
