Texas Football: 3 OL’s who must step up to replace Samuel Cosmi
The offensive line for Texas football took a huge loss on Nov. 29, with the news that redshirt junior OT Samuel Cosmi is opting out for the rest of 2020.
A much-needed win for fourth-year Texas football head coach Tom Herman and his team didn’t arrive in the fashion they wanted on Black Friday/Senior Day, as they took on the No. 13 ranked Iowa State Cyclones at home on Nov. 27. Head coach Matt Campbell and his Iowa State team got the best of Herman’s Texas squad by the very narrow final score of 23-20.
Herman and the Longhorns couldn’t get the field goal they needed on the final drive of the game to tie it up. Granted senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger didn’t position the special teams unit well. Ehlinger took a sack on what was likely to be his last play at DKR of his college career, taking a sack and making junior kicker Cameron Dicker knock through a whopping 57-yard field goal attempt if Texas was to tie the game up at 23 to sent it into overtime.
The likely inability for the Longhorns to make an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game this year wasn’t the only thing that this team lost out on following this letdown against Iowa State. Texas also figured out that it would lose the standout redshirt junior offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi, who looks to be opting out for the rest of the 2020 season.
Cosmi is now likely to spend the rest of his time heading into the 2021 offseason preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft. He is probably going to fall as a mid-to-late first round pick in the 2021 draft, so it’s not completely surprising that he opted out for the rest of this season. This loss still means that Texas will have to find other answers in the trenches the rest of the way.
Here’s a look at three Texas offensive linemen that must step up in the wake of Cosmi opting out of the rest of the 2020 season.
