Texas Football: 6 potential coaching replacements for Tom Herman

If Texas football and athletic director Chris del Conte are to part ways with fourth-year head coach Tom Herman anytime soon, who would be up next?

There’s any number of ways that the Texas football could look if they want to replace fourth-year head coach Tom Herman in the near future. All of the chatter is pointing toward a limited time frame left for Herman as the head coach on the Forty Acres. After Texas’ tough last second loss to the No. 13 ranked Iowa State Cyclones on Nov. 27 (Black Friday/Senior Day) by the final score of 23-20.

This was yet another difficult loss in the last minute (a lot of games have also come down to overtime for the Longhorns this year) for Herman and the Longhorns this season. Texas now holds a record of 5-3 (4-3 Big 12) after the three-point loss to Iowa State after junior kicker Cameron Dicker couldn’t hit a distant 57-yard field goal attempt to try and push the game into overtime.

With the loss, the Longhorns were bounced from both major polls (AP Poll and Coaches Poll). And it essentially decimates the hopes for Texas to get a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game for the first time since the 2018 season. Texas would need the Oklahoma Sooners and Iowa State to absolutely implode from here on out. And there’s little to no chance that will happen in the next few weeks.

There’s a lot that Texas athletic director Chris del Conte has to decide on concerning Herman’s job status with the Longhorns. His buyout is set just north of $15 million if he’s to part ways with Texas before the arrival of the 2021 offseason.
