Texas Football: 6 potential coaching replacements for Tom Herman
3) Texas football HC candidates
The Big 12 candidate: Matt Campbell, Iowa State HC
There would be some very sweet irony involved if the Longhorns were the team that went after Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell to replace Herman in the near future. The irony would lie in the fact that Iowa State was the team that applied so much more heat to the hot seat of Herman with their win over the Longhorns over the weekend.
The new heights that Campbell took this Iowa State football program to in recent years is nothing short of amazing. A real chance exists for the Clones to win a Big 12 Championship this season, although it would take them beating head coach Lincoln Riley and the Sooners for the second time in the same season. That would be no easy feat.
Iowa State registered a record of 7-2 (7-1 Big 12) so far this season. That includes wins over both Oklahoma and Texas. Campbell is still yet to have a single losing season since his first season after arriving in Ames in 2016. Outside of that three win campaign in 2016, Iowa State has won at least seven or eight games in every year under Campbell’s direction.
In all likelihood, a blue blood will give Campbell a shot in the near future if he continues the ascent of this Iowa State program. He’s truly one of the rising head coaching stars around the college football landscape. Whether Texas would actually give him a shot is yet to be seen, but that is a move that would delight a lot of Longhorn football fans.
