Texas Football: del Conte ‘feeling the pressure’ on the Tom Herman decision
Texas football head coach Tom Herman is giving athletic director Chris del Conte a tough decision to make on his job in the near future.
The looming decision that has to be made in the near future concerning the Texas football program and fourth-year head coach Tom Herman is heating up in the national discussion after the tough three-point loss to the Iowa State Cyclones on Black Friday. Herman and his Texas team could not overcome head coach Matt Campbell and No. 13 ranked Iowa State, in a loss by the final score of 23-20, on Senior Day (specifically Nov. 27) at home at DKR.
The loss for Herman and the Longhorns to the Cyclones heading into the post-Thanksgiving weekend moves them to a record of 5-3 (4-3 Big 12). The loss to Iowa State also bounced the Longhorns from both major polls this week (AP Poll and Coaches Poll). What hurts the most is the fact that missing out on this opportunity against the Clones essentially dashes the hopes for Texas to make an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game this year.
With all of this in mind, it’s going to be pretty difficult for Texas athletic director Chris del Conte to make a decision on the Herman situation in the near future. It’s not likely that Texas is going to make a final decision on Herman before the Dec. 5 road game against the Kansas State Wildcats, but there might soon be a plan in place heading into the offseason.
According to a report from Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports over the weekend, he mentioned that del Conte is “feeling the pressure” on the looming Herman decision that he has in his hands. There’s no easy decision right now, especially since Herman still holds a buyout worth more than $15 million.
It’s hard to know how much winning out through the rest of this season will help Herman’s case heading into the offseason. Losing essentially the entirety of his 2022 recruiting class, with the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers flipping his commitment from Texas to the Ohio State Buckeyes, doesn’t help Herman’s case one bit.
A lot of this decision from del Conte will hinge on the coaching candidates that are available whenever Herman is let go (if that does happen in the near future). The name that keeps getting dropped in this Texas coaching job discussion (including in the Thamel piece on Yahoo Sports) is the former Ohio State and Florida head coach Urban Meyer
