Texas football reportedly one of three spots Urban Meyer would consider
Former Ohio State and Florida head coach Urban Meyer is reportedly still in consideration if Texas football does decide to replace Tom Herman.
An update on what the current standing is for the Texas football program both with fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and the Fox College Football analyst Urban Meyer dropped on Dec. 2 (thanks to Horns247, paid content). Texas has their head coach on one of the hotter seats of any in the entire college football landscape at the moment.
Herman has led the Longhorns to register a record of 5-3 (4-3 Big 12), coming off another disappointing loss at the hands of the No. 13 ranked Iowa State Cyclones back on Black Friday/Senior Day. The loss to Iowa State came on a missed 57-yard field goal attempt in the dying seconds of the game, which could’ve at least sent things into overtime. The final score of that loss to the Clones was 23-20.
After falling short to the Clones last week, the Longhorns chances to earn a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game and earn a decent postseason slotting both were largely decimated. The Big 12 Championship Game now looks like it will be a rematch between the Oklahoma Sooners and Iowa State, come Dec. 19.
However, with all of this mounting pressure on the shoulders of Herman, there’s a lot of discussion surrounding his future with the program. If there is a realistic shot that the Longhorns can hire Meyer, then it looks like even Texas athletic director Chris del Conte is very willing to consider the move.
In this Horns247 report, the Meyer update was mostly concerning his status both with health and his thought process on returning to the college football coaching ranks. The former Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida Gators three-time National Championship winning head coach has an arachnoid cyst on his brain that caused him a lot of pain before he retired a couple of years ago as Ohio State’s head coach. That could play a role in his final decision on returning to coach in the near future.
Although it does sound like Meyer would only return for a few programs if he was offered the opportunity. Those three programs are reportedly the USC Trojans, Longhorns, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Granted it doesn’t look like a coaching change is coming soon for Notre Dame or even USC (although Clay Helton is likely still on a hotter seat than Brian Kelly).
It does sound like Meyer is at least considering the move, and the Texas regents are eager to reach out and see what he says. But there’s still no guarantee that Meyer will even return to the college football coaching world, let alone go with Texas.
