1) Texas football DB’s who can replace Sterns

The roller coaster ride of a career that the former elite five-star recruit and junior defensive back B.J. Foster had on the Forty Acres to date could finally come to a head in the next few weeks. Foster was productive at different points of the fall so far, but the consistency still isn’t there. Inconsistency was a part of Foster’s game over the course of the last two years.

And with Sterns opting out of the rest of the season, the starting safety spot across from Brown is now likely to come down to Foster and redshirt junior safety Montrell Estell. Given the raw talent and the number of snaps he’s taken in the last few years, Foster would seem like the obvious choice there, but he has to be more consistent.

In seven games played so far this season, Foster was up and down again. He’s registered 36 combined tackles, one tackle for loss, no sacks, and three pass breakups. Foster wasn’t all that productive so far this season.

It’s very easy to get carried away with the career numbers of Foster. For his three years playing for Texas so far, he’s registered 117 combined tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, five sacks, two interceptions, nine pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.

Foster has missed roughly one-in-three tackle attempts on the season so far, and he’s gotten beat in pass coverage often. He is good for a lot of unreal plays given the pure amount of talent and gifted physical tools he brings to the table. That could be intriguing to watch if he gets the start at safety in Sterns’ place against Kansas State this weekend.
