2) Takeaways from Texas football’s win vs. K-State

Defense has work to do, but played well considering depth losses

This week was not one to remember for first-year defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash in terms of all of the losses that he was dealt to his secondary. Texas was down the likes of junior cornerback Jalen Green and junior safety/SPUR B.J. Foster due to various injury issues. And standout junior safety Caden Sterns opted out of the rest of the 2020 season earlier in the week.

With all of that in mind, the Longhorns needed big games out of secondary leaders like junior cornerback D’Shawn Jamison, senior safety Chris Brown, and redshirt junior cornerback Josh Thompson. But Texas got some production on the defensive side of the ball from some new faces in this big win over Kansas State.

Freshman defensive back Jerrin Thompson got his first career interception in just his fourth game played. He got a big pick of Kansas State quarterback Will Howard in the first half that really helped push the momentum to the Longhorns at a key moment. It wasn’t just Thompson that had a nice game in an elevated role this weekend.

Redshirt freshman linebacker David Gbenda got more game action this weekend, and registered his first career pick. This was just the sixth game played of Gbenda’s college career.

Texas did allow 31 points in this game, but it was largely due to the raw amount of drives and lack of rest time that they got thanks to how fast their offense was scoring.
