Potential Texas football head coach candidate Urban Meyer has reportedly already passed on one offer from the administration to takeover this program.

The talk of the town of late surrounding the Texas football program has to do with the hot seat of fourth-year head coach Tom Herman. The replacement that most Texas fans would like athletic director Chris del Conte to go after if they do part ways with Herman in the near future is the former Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida Gators three-time National Championship winning head coach Urban Meyer.

It won’t be an easy job for whoever CDC would replace Herman with. If it were Meyer, that would bring a lot of excitement for the direction of the Longhorns program. Herman seemed like the right guy for the job when he was hired away from the Houston Cougars football program following the end of the 2016 season.

A decision on Herman likely won’t be made until the end of the season, unless things really get worse over the course of the next two weeks. Texas rounds out the regular season with the Kansas schools. They are currently facing head coach Chris Klieman and the Kansas State Wildcats on the road in Manhattan on Dec. 5.

There’s probably a lot of Longhorns fans that don’t really care how the season rounds out as long as there’s a promising head coaching hire made and the results on the recruiting trail improve soon. Of course, hiring Meyer would be a way to restore a lot of excitement into the program. But how likely is it that Texas actually gets Meyer to the Forty Acres?

Meyer has reportedly (per Horns247, paid content) turned down at least one call from the UT regents/administration with a juicy offer. And the regents will try to make more offers to Meyer, hoping he’ll eventually say yes, but there’s no guarantees that happens.

Apparently the plan now among the administration is to make Meyer “an offer they hope he won’t refuse”. That doesn’t offer a whole lot of certainty for the Longhorns actually hiring Meyer as their next head coach if they do in fact replace Herman heading into next offseason.

Texas holds a record of 5-3 (4-3 Big 12), coming off their disappointing loss to the No. 13 ranked Iowa State Cyclones back on Black Friday/Senior Day by a three-point margin. They are up early on Kansas State on the morning of Dec. 5, though.
