Texas Basketball: 3 takeaways from disappointing loss to Villanova
1) Takeaways from Texas basketball’s loss to Nova
Same trio continues their brilliance
There are three players, two in the starting five and one coming off the bench, that are really standing out for Smart and the Longhorns through five games played this season. The duo in the starting five are the standout guard pairing of senior Matt Coleman and junior Courtney Ramey. Those two were x-factors for the Longhorns this season, and are shining out of the gates.
The other worth noting in this standout Longhorns trio so far this season is the former four-star recruit and sophomore power forward Kai Jones. Although he has played in all five games this season for Texas, Jones has just one start.
Moreover, Coleman and Ramey were the spark plugs for the Longhorns offense in this game. The former of those two registered 17 points, three rebounds, three assists, no steals, and three turnovers. And Coleman shot 7-of-15 from the field, 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe.
Meanwhile, Ramey registered 17 points, three rebounds, two assists, one steal, one block, and three turnovers. He also fouled out at a key point in the game, with less than two minutes remaining in the second half. Ramey shot 7-of-11 from the field, 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 1-of-1 from the free-throw line.
Jones was once again the biggest spark plug off the bench for the Longhorns. He registered seven points (on 3-of-5 from the field), two rebounds, and one steal, in just 20 minutes played.
