Greg Brown’s breakout may have arrived

Through five games played for the elite former five-star recruit and freshman power forward Greg Brown this season, he showed certain flashes, but was never really able to put together a complete performance that was both productive and efficient. That all changed in this convincing win for the Longhorns over Texas State.

Coming into this game, Brown was shooting 33.3 percent from the field and less than 12.0 percent from beyond the arc. He turned around a lot of those trends in this win. In 22 minutes played, Brown registered a game-high 18 points, two rebounds, no assists, no steals, three blocks, and just one turnover.

Speaking solely in terms of turnovers, you really have two different versions of Brown that you can get any given game. In three of six games played this season, he registered at least three turnovers in each. But the other three saw him register just two combined turnovers. There’s not much rhyme or reason to it either, since the three games he did well in the turnover department came in the wins over Texas State, UNC, and Davidson.

Moreover, Brown shot 7-of-14 from the field, 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and 1-of-1 from the free-throw line. Maybe this will be a sign of improvement and consistency from Brown shooting downtown from here on out. After he started out the season shooting just 1-of-15 from downtown in his first four games, he’s a much improved 4-of-8 in the last two.
