Texas Football: 4 HC candidates next in line with Urban Meyer pursuit over
Who could be next up in a possible Texas football head coaching search with the Urban Meyer pursuit now appearing to be over?
If the Texas football program does wind up on a quest next offseason to find a replacement for fourth-year head coach Tom Herman, the shortlist of candidates is really starting to dwindle down. There is still a large faction of the Texas fan base that would not be happy with Herman sticking around heading into the 2021 season. And there’s a few good reasons for that.
Within the past week, the Longhorns learned that the pursuit of multiple top head potential head coaching candidates is over, in all likelihood. Florida Gators second-year head coach Dan Mullen and the Iowa State Cyclones fifth-year head coach Matt Campbell both expressed their disinterest in pursuing the Texas coaching job, assuming it comes open in the near future.
And the worst news of all that emerging in the potential coaching search this week, if the Longhorns do ultimately decide to replace Herman in the near future, concerned Fox College Football analyst Urban Meyer. The former Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida three-time National Championship winning head coach sounds like he will stick with the retirement path instead of returning to the college football coaching ranks in 2021.
Meyer was clearly the top candidate that Longhorns fans, administration, regents, boosters, etc. considered to be the potential home run hire. But since that won’t work out right now, other options will need to be in line for Texas athletic director Chris del Conte if he still wants to move on from Herman.
Here’s a look into four more potential coaching candidates for the Longhorns with Meyer out of the running.
