1) Texas football HC candidates after Meyer

Hugh Freeze, Liberty HC

What would definitely be a bold and/or controversial hire for the Longhorns, despite his proven success on the gridiron, could come with the Liberty Flames and former Ole Miss Rebels head coach Hugh Freeze. Starting out his FBS head coaching run with the Arkansas State Red Wolves back during the 2011 season, Freeze had a lot of success in the win column at every stop of his so far.

The problem for Freeze was all of the scandals that caused him to depart from the Ole Miss program following the 2016 season. It took roughly three years for another FBS team to be willing enough to take a flier out on Freeze after that scandal past at Ole Miss. Liberty hired Freeze prior to the start of the 2019 season. Since then, he’s registered a record of 17-6, and maintained a consistent level of improvement.

Freeze’s career record as an FBS head coach sits at 66-34 (.660 winning percentage), and he is 4-2 in the postseason. During his first four years at Ole Miss, they improved by one win per season. The 2016 season is where it started to come off the rails a bit. And Liberty went from a record of 8-5 last season, to currently sit at 9-1 this fall.

It likely won’t be all that long until Freeze lands another Power Five head coaching job. The decision on where he lands will come down to how much he’s improved the success of his program off-the-field and how much of a risk any certain athletic director is willing to take on him over the long haul.
