Texas Football: 3 HC candidates that would be better than Tom Herman
2) Hindsight Texas football HC replacements for Herman
Jamey Chadwell, Coastal Carolina HC
Going with a fast rising Group of Five coaching candidate is what got the Longhorns in bed with Herman in the first place. He was one of the fast rising stars in the college football coaching ranks following the 2016 campaign, where he made the Houston Cougars was one of the better and more talented Group of Five programs in the entire country.
There are obviously a lot of risks that can come along with hiring a hot shot and fast rising Group of Five coaching candidate. The proven resume usually isn’t there over a long stretch of time, and there are always cultural differences between a lot of blue bloods and Group of Five programs. Nonetheless, there are still some solid Group of Five candidates out there that are very different from what Herman brought to the table more than four years ago coming from Houston.
One that would’ve been worth considering for Texas was the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers head coach and potential Coach of the Year candidate Jamey Chadwell. In the very near future, Chadwell is likely to land a bigger coaching job than with Coastal Carolina. What he’s done in Myrtle Beach in the last few years is nothing short of ultra admirable.
The course that the Coastal Carolina charted in the last few years is very impressive. Chadwell went from one of the better Group of Five assistants in the country to shining as Coastal Carolina’s interim head coach in 2017 and 2018. When he was named the full Chanticleers head coach ahead of last season, he improved the program by two wins. And Coastal Carolina is now 11-0, and looking to win the program’s first Sun Belt Championship.
The heights for which Chadwell took Coastal Carolina of late is truly impressive, and the main reason why he’s about to get a lot more job offers at prominent spots in the near future.
