Could another quarterback commit be on the way for head coach Tom Herman and his 2021 Texas football recruiting class with a current Tech pledge?

Just one day remains now for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class until the Early Signing Period begins, which presents an opportunity for fourth-year head coach Tom Herman to turnaround his results on the trail. Herman didn’t have the best run at things on the recruiting trail for his 2021 and 2022 classes this fall.

One potential problem area for the Longhorns now in their 2021 and 2022 recruiting classes is at the quarterback position. When Texas originally landed a potentially program changing commitment (at the time) back in August from the elite Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers for their 2022 class, they wound up losing the pledge from four-star Katy-Tompkins dual-threat quarterback Jalen Milroe in the 2021 class.

Now that both Milroe and Ewers are committed to other programs that are not Texas, the quarterback position has a much bleaker outlook in the future on the Forty Acres. Herman needs to find a turnaround point for his next few recruiting classes, and fast.

A possible area of hope could have arrived early this week, with all of the coaching staff changes occurring right now with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The highest rated commit in Texas Tech’s 2021 class, talented four-star Eastland pro-style quarterback Behren Morton is entertaining other options amid the changes going on under head coach Matt Wells, according to a 247Sports report.

With Wells’ dismissal of now former Texas Tech offensive coordinator David Yost, Morton looks like he could be an emerging target of the Longhorns now. Three of the other schools he is reportedly looking into too are the Oklahoma State Cowboys, TCU Horned Frogs, and Miami Hurricanes.

Flipping the commitment of Morton from Texas Tech to Texas could definitely shift some of the fortunes on the recruiting trail for Herman. It would take a big effort, and Texas Tech making a bad hire at offensive coordinator, but they might have some time if Morton doesn’t sign his National Letter of Intent during the Early Signing Period later this week.

Texas has yet to send Morton a scholarship offer since he was committed to Texas Tech since Oct. 2019. He does currently hold offers from 11 schools. The highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the SMU Mustangs, Wisconsin Badgers, USC Trojans, Texas A&M Aggies, TCU, and Baylor Bears.

But if there is genuine interest from Morton shown in flipping his commitment to the Longhorns, obviously an offer would be extended.

What Texas would be getting out of this 6-foot-2 and 185 pound signal caller is the nation’s No. 158 2021 high school prospect, No. 12 pro-style quarterback, and No. 28 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 108 high school prospect, No. 6 pro-style quarterback, and No. 17 prospect out of Texas.

Since the lone quarterback commit for the Longhorns in their 2021 class is the three-star Austin High pro-style signal caller Charles Wright, landing Morton would be huge. The former Iowa State Cyclones commit Wright ranks as the nation’s No. 886 2021 high school prospect, No. 33 pro-style quarterback, and No. 127 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
