A rather pedestrian start to the Early Signing Period for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class did see most of this group get signed down on Dec. 16.

The first day of the Early Signing Period is here for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class, on the morning of Dec. 16. This roller coaster ride of a recruiting cycle for Herman and his staff is about to reach its first major signing day. While it’s hard to know how many prospects around the country will keep to their commitments in this weird cycle in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic, we are soon to find out this wave of them that sign their National Letter of Intent.

Texas definitely could use a boost in this Early Signing Period for their 2021 class. Herman saw his 2021 class slip up quite a bit since the start of this college football season. But the first half of the first day of the Early Signing Period (on Dec. 16) didn’t bring a whole lot of action to the table for the Longhorns.

As of the early afternoon of Dec. 16, Texas holds 18 commits in their 2021 class. They also landed a key addition out of the NCAA Transfer Portal with the former McNeese State standout cornerback Darion Dunn, on Dec. 16.

At this point in time, all but one of the 18 commits in the Longhorns 2021 class were officially signed down. The lone remaining commit that has yet to sign his letter of intent is the four-star Kimball cornerback Ishmael Ibraheem, who was dealing with some off-the-field issues within the past week.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 17 in the nation and holds steady in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas could use a nice boost on the trail for their 2021 class, whether it be during the rest of the Early Signing Period, or ahead of National Signing Day come next February.

With all of this in mind, here’s a look into the position-by-position grades for the Longhorns 2021 signing class.

*Updated: Texas did land a commitment from three-star Holy Cross defensive end Barryn Sorrell on the afternoon of Dec. 16.
