Texas football 2021 position-by-position class grades

Quarterback

A very crazy sequence of events on the recruiting trail at the quarterback position for Herman and the Longhorns in their 2021 class hit a stopping point for this cycle at the first day of the Early Signing Period. The lone quarterback signee, as of the early afternoon of Dec. 16, for the Longhorns in the 2021 class is the unheralded three-star Austin High pro-style quarterback Charles Wright.

Texas flipped the commitment of Wright from head coach Matt Campbell and the Iowa State Cyclones to their 2021 class after a key sequence of dominoes that fell on the trail earlier in the fall. Once the Longhorns originally landed the commitment of the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers for their 2022 class back in August, it cost the 2021 class their top commit at the position.

Four-star Katy-Tompkins dual-threat quarterback Jalen Milroe wound up flipping his commitment from Texas to the Alabama Crimson Tide soon after Ewers pledged to the Longhorns. Once Ewers decommitted, and then ultimately gave his pledge to the Ohio State Buckeyes, that meant that Herman and the Longhorns lost both him and Milroe.

Moreover, Wright ranks as the nation’s No. 885 2021 high school prospect, No. 32 pro-style quarterback, and No. 125 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 26 pro-style quarterback and No. 126 prospect out of Texas.

Wright could be a solid contributor for his hometown Longhorns a ways down the road. But knowing that they could’ve had Milroe to compete for early snaps as soon as next year hurts.
