Texas Football: 3 biggest disappointments for Herman in 2021 class
Some positives did emerge for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class during the Early Signing Period, but nothing to really write home about.
With the Early Signing Period about to be in the books for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class and fourth-year head coach Tom Herman, the attention will then turn to any remaining commits the staff can land before National Signing Day come February. Texas had a mostly quiet Early Signing Period, with most of the action happening on the first day of the festivities.
The first day of the Early Signing Period was back on Dec. 16. And there were no significant decommitments or flips among high school and/or JUCO prospects for the Longhorns 2021 class this week. The lone flip they landed came via the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Texas got a nice addition to the secondary by way of the transfer portal when they landed the former NC State Wolfpack cornerback commit and senior Darion Dunn. Dunn is a former defensive back of the FCS McNeese State Cowboys, but he was one of the more highly sought after graduate transfers at his position group heading into next offseason.
Since Texas could be losing a good amount of depth in the secondary next year, landing a graduate transfer that can make an immediate impact at the cornerback position like Dunn is big.
The lone commitment among high school prospects for the Longhorns in the Early Signing Period so far came from an unheralded three-star strong-side defensive end recruit, and Holy Cross product Barryn Sorrell. That brought the number of commits in the Longhorns 2021 class up to 19.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class holds steady at No. 17 in the nation and remains in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Their highest rated commit/signee is the elite five-star Denton-Ryan athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders.
There is still a lot to be desired in this 2021 recruiting class before National Signing Day arrives on the Forty Acres. Here’s a look into three of the biggest disappointments from the Longhorns 2021 class through the end of the Early Signing Period.
