Texas Football: Early projections for the 2021 Horns QB depth chart
Early projected 2021 Texas football QB room
Starter: Casey Thompson
By far the most experienced quarterback remaining on the projected roster for next season for Herman, Yurcich, and the Longhorns is redshirt sophomore dual-threat Casey Thompson. The versatile and agile 6-foot-1 and 200 pound former four-star dual-threat quarterback recruit Thompson is really the only other signal caller fans on the Forty Acres saw snaps out of beside Ehlinger in the last two years.
Thompson has 69 career snaps over the course of the last two seasons under his belt, and a plethora of playing time from the two previous spring games. He’s registered 12 career completions on 19 passing attempts, good for 139 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. Thompson amassed a 63.2 completion percentage, 9.4 adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a 159.3 passer efficiency rating.
To add to that tally, Thompson has 36 career rushing yards on 14 attempts, with one rushing touchdown.
Most of his production in the last two years came this fall. And most of the production this fall came in the dominant season opening win over UTEP a few months back. Thompson hasn’t really made any mistakes from what we’ve seen from him so far. He deserves a legit shot to be the starting quarterback next season.
Coming out of Newcastle High School in Newcastle, OK, Thompson was an integral part of the Longhorns 2018 recruiting class. He signed with the Longhorns as part of a two quarterback class in the 2018 cycle alongside Rising. Thompson ranked as the nation’s No. 291 2018 high school prospect, No. 14 dual-threat quarterback, and No. 6 prospect out of Oklahoma (247Sports Composite).
