2) Remaining 2021 Texas football QB targets

If the Longhorns want to look out-of-state to find their next answer at the quarterback position in the 2021 class, the problem of finding depth could become even more difficult to solve. A good place to look if they turn their attention to the west coast could be the underrated 6-foot-3 and 200 pound Damien (CA) pro-style quarterback Donovan Smith.

Yurcich mainly tends to look for pro-style quarterbacks to fit his offensive schemes. That tended to be true dating back to his days as the Ohio State passing game coordinator (at least in terms of his targets on the recruiting trail) and as offensive coordinator with the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

With that in mind, a quarterback that has a higher ceiling for a three-star signal caller and that has excellent physical tools like Smith could be the way to go.

This Rancho Cucamonga native, now hailing out of Damien High School in La Verne, CA, is starting to pick up a bit more attention on the recruiting trail of late. But he still holds an offer from just one school as of the morning of Dec. 24. While he has a number of scout looks reportedly coming his way, the only scholarship offer Smith has as of this moment is from the Cal Golden Bears.

He also has reported scout looks from the likes of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Boston College Eagles, Oregon State Beavers, UCLA Bruins, and Washington State Cougars.

It likely wouldn’t be too difficult to build a solid foundation with Smith if the Longhorns were to offer him in the near future. And his stock could dramatically rise depending on how California’s High School football season plays out come the spring semester.

Moreover, Smith ranks as the nation’s No. 1,327 2021 high school prospect, No. 46 pro-style quarterback, and No. 108 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 33 pro-style quarterback and No. 93 prospect out of California.
