A miracle turnaround on the recruiting trail

Establishing a solid foundation for the future of this program is something that put Herman on shaky ground of late. His recruiting results over the course of the last few cycles were good. Texas became accustomed to hauling in top five and 10 ranked recruiting classes in the nation under Herman’s direction. But that all faded out in this cycle.

Texas fans also watched their 2022 recruiting class crumble before their eyes in the span of less than 24 hours this fall. It all came crashing down for the Longhorns 2022 class when they received a decommitment from the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers. Shortly after the decommitment of Ewers, Texas got word of the same thing from four-star Lancaster wide receiver Phaizon Wilson.

The 2021 Texas class also isn’t doing very good at the moment. They have just one five-star commit, and nothing close to a second. Texas could really use a commitment from the uber-talented Cy-Fair four-star running back LJ Johnson ahead of National Signing Day 2021.

Johnson looks to have a commitment decision that is narrowing down to the Longhorns and rival Texas A&M Aggies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 40 2021 high school prospect, No. 3 running back, and No. 8 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).

A class that still has some solid pieces would get a massive boost if they get that coveted pledge from the in-state product Johnson. He would add a valuable presence to the backfield along with the underrated three-star Hallettsville running back commit/signee Jonathon Brooks.
